Migrant and Seasonal Head Start
Health and Nutrition

An essential part of preparing a youngster for school is making sure that they are healthy enough to learn and grow. Part of the Migrant and Seasonal Head Start program includes working with parents to help them take an active role in promoting their child’s health and nutrition. To do this, we encourage families to identify a medical and dental "home." We help them address common barriers (transportation, translation and cost), so that health services can continue once a child begins kindergarten.

By requiring immunizations, yearly physicals, dental screenings, TB tests, and nutrition assessments, the children in the MSHS program receive comprehensive care. Health and Nutrition Specialists also teach the children and staff the importance of good hygiene and healthy eating in maintaining excellent health. Children with disabilities receive an extra measure of care as we collaborate with outside agencies to provide the best treatment possible.

The children of migrant and seasonal farm workers are a unique and precious population with specific health and nutrition needs. It is our goal to promote healthy living early so that good habits can form and last a lifetime. A special thanks goes out to all of the MSHS supporters, especially those who donate time and resources to improving the health and nutrition of the families in the program.
