Eviction Prevention

When a financial crisis occurs and a low-income individual or family is unable to pay their rent and threatened with eviction, they may apply for one-time emergency assistance from CAPSLO’s Eviction Prevention Program. Payments will not exceed one month’s rent per household and assistance averages $400 per household. Checks are mailed directly to the landlord.

To be eligible for this program, households must meet the following criteria:

  • Rent must already be in arrears or must be due within five days.
  • Assistance is necessary to avoid eviction of the individual/family.
  • Clients must provide proof of emergency need.
  • There must be a reasonable prospect that the client will be able to resume rent payments; therefore, clients who have no income to pay rent must demonstrate that the situation will improve by the next time the rent is due.
  • All other resources have been exhausted.
  • To enable us to aid those who are receiving no assistance at all, persons receiving homeless assistance funds may not be eligible.
  • Clients are income eligible (under 130% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines).
  • All persons seeking Eviction Prevention or Rental Assistance funding are counseled about budgeting and income management and are linked to other services that may help relieve their cash flow problems; for example, a household may be linked to other CAPSLO programs for food, utility assistance, clothing, medical, or childcare services in order to “free up” money for rent and deposits. Households receive additional information and referral to help them understand other community services available to assist them in meeting emergency needs.
